We all began on the African Continent (yes, we all began as black people). As people began to migrate northward where the sun was not as strong, they no longer needed as much melanin in their skin so their skin lightened up. Peoples who stopped and stayed in certain places where they needed more melanin than those further north, but not as much as those south of the equator ended up with various shades in between black and white.

Pigmentation in your skin. Small molecules in your cells in your skin give it color. It's basically a defense against the sunlight. Those who are exposed to more sunlight, have more pigment to defend themselves with (so light just bounces off instead of getting absorbed). If you look at where people with specific skin pigments (colors) came from, you'll see that is matches well with sun exposure.
