why do people say put on a pair of pants when its really only one?

cause it has 2 legs i suppose , but it is stupid to call it a pair of pants

Wikipedia states that back in the day an article of clothing below the waist was called a pant (for one leg) and when sewn together were called pants or a pair of pant(s).

Yea that's a good question. Maybe its gramatically wrong. but maybe it is because we have two legs.
