Are we talking about the 'ego' referred to by the masses or the 'ego' in Freudian terms? Those are two different things...

Ego (General Population)- Ones perception of how 'good' or outstanding one's self is, either in general or based on criteria dealing with specific actions and skills.

Ego (Freud)- The ego, super-ego, and id are the divisions of the psyche according to psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's "structural theory". The id contains "primitive desires" (hunger, rage, and sex), the super-ego contains internalized norms, morality and taboos, and the ego mediates between the two and may include or give rise to the sense of self.

***I would say that telling me I do a very good job of mediating between my instinctual desires and my morals would really boost both of my egos.
