You don't leave a car in N because that is neutral. The transmission is not engaged, and the car can roll freely. That is a safety issue. The car could start rolling and hit someone or something causing damage, injury, or possible death.
N is used when you need the car to roll freely, like when being picked up by a wrecker, or towed by another vehicle while not under power.

As long as you engage the parking brake N is the same a P. Neither one of them is engaging the gears.

Probably for towing purposes. You don't really want to tow a car with an automatic, it's bad for the torque converter.

I use it to check my transmission fluid level as the car is running, with the parking brake on, of course.

Put it in N = Neutral ( when you are towing it)
(when you are pushing it, if it runs out of gas)
