Probably he is too ashamed of failure in the relationship. If you were the one to break it up then it would be more incentive not to call you because he feels like he failed you. If he was the one, the is might be because he find that he couldn't suit your needs, and let you go to find some one that would make you happy, though he was still strongly attached to you.

That might be the reason; because that's what I did. I would rather see the girl I love be happy than not to be me.

Sometimes men have too much pride. Some of them dont know how to communicate with women and they dont want to seem like they're hurting, when they really are. Depending on how long ago this was, he could be angry with you now. If you really want him back, make the first move. We all wait to see if the next one is going to make the first move, and too much time passes by, then it seems like its too late.
