The tin drum haunts me. The writing gives me nightmares. 1925 was so long ago, Oscar is too honest his canvas hangs in the halls of guilt.

The Lost Honour of Katerina Blum was written in the 1970s when the Major "Terrorist" threat in (West) Germany was the Red Army Faction (a vaguely Maoist group known also as the Bader-Meinhoff Gang). I thought the book (which I read in English translation when 15, was more of a study on how the Tabloid press can destroy somebody's life. That said I read it in English translation, not having enough German to read it in the original.

Grass is a Nobel Prize winner from Germany. He is much like Kurt Vonnegut in his depictions of the horrors of war in modern times. Read his 'The Tin Drum' for starters.

As to Matzerath I haven't read anything by him. Sorry.
