I agree with Marvinator. I was a supervisor in a union shop a few years ago, and I cannot believe how difficult it was to make sure work was done efficiently.
Many decades ago, before there were labor laws, company's did take advantage of their workers. However, because of unions back then, labor laws were created. Unions were effective in making sure the laborer was not taking advantage of and had a voice in their working conditions. There are quite a few labor laws on the books now that are a result of unions, however unions nowadays seem to be more effective at creating red tape in regards to work being done.
Some of the union stewards (elected workers in the union that are responsible for representing the union members to their union leaders and meeting with managers of the company) will spend full days investigating nuisance complaints from union employees rather than working at their designated work station. Also, the union member may be pulled away from his/her work station to meet with union stewards or union reps, thus preventing products to be made in a timely fashion.
This obviously adds a cost to the employer and thus this cost is passed on to the American consumer who would purchase the finished product.
If you have ever worked in a union shop before, I am sure you noticed how many hours the employer and the union spent making sure the "contract" between the company and the union was followed to the "t" rather than making sure labor laws are followed, hard workers are rewarded, and products were made.
Ever wonder why there are so many products being sold in America that are made overseas? or why foreign products tend to be cheaper? Unions are not the sole cause for the higher prices, but they certainly don't make American products less expensive.

Unions have about outlived their usefullness. These days they are more a factore in inflation than a factor in better working conditions. Most factories are carefully watched by the government agencies so the work of the unions in that area is mostly already done. What the unions do, however is force raises for ALL workers regardless of their efforts, they force the company to keep troublemakers employed and they cause work stoppages when the UNION doesn't get what they feel their consituenets want.
Fact: Peterbilt Nashville is a Union Shop. BUT, because of the problems in working wiht the Union, the average worker there makes LESS than a worker working in the factory at Peterbilt in Texas (which is not a union shop.) Why? Management in Texas has more involvement with the workers and goes out of their way to make things work because they work WITH not against the employee.

I think that the unions had their time and place. I think that they accomplished alot of things and now that they have nothing more to really do but threaten companies to drive up wages for jobs that don't deserve it.... They are helping to create problems in the work force that weaken the economy, threaten jobs and imbalance markets... all in the name of letting the a business owner know who is boss. I don't know how many times I have heard a person who is part of a union be told that they had to do this or they would be out of the union, when all they wanted to do was work and be happy that they had a job... I have turned down a few jobs over the years because there were unions there... I have seen how unions have hurt many of my friends and their families, as well as the tactics that some people in unions use to keep their strong hold on a workforce.. I think people should wake up and quite listening to the propaganda of unions that does nothing but perpetuate the union and create problems for the workers... but that is just my opinion...

I work with Union people, specifically, Teamsters. They are some of the laziest, whiniest people I have ever met. There are a few that are an exception, but I have never seen such a lack of motivation from people who are making just shy of an arm and a leg and never can be fired. We have had people that should have lost their jobs for being on drugs, running others over on forklifts, and so on and the union keeps bring them back so I don't feel safe around them. I think the food service union is better since my experiences around them have been far more pleasant. Good question!!

Because they cause companies to pay higher wages than they can afford and then the company is not as profitable so they close and people loose their jobs.
