I'm interested in getting a motorcycle, but I don't want to get something that will drive me into a wall at 200mph. What would be a good bike to learn on, yet not be a fast scooter?

go get yourself a honda shadow 600cc. if you go smaller you will be dissapointed in a week. if you go much bigger you will probably kill yourself. i have one and it is a good starter bike. it only weighs 450lbs and has a low seat of only 26".

You say motorcyle and scooter? I'm confused as to which one you actually want....but it pretty much depends on what you can hold up weight wise and how fast you want it to go. A 250 cc bike is considered a beginner bike but you may not get up steep hills with it at more that 35 mph. A 400 cc will do the everyday job but is a heavier bike...dry weight around 250lbs more or less. Check out the bikes you think you'll like online or in your local shop and ask for or check the spec sheets for dry weight. Also motorcycles are 5 speed and scooters are automatic twist and go. Your decision.

Depends on where you're going to use it.

US?

Urban? or off-road?

Distance? riding around for fun, commuting or longer trips.

Traffic?

For a starter a smaller, lighter bike is good. Cheaper is better. If you're in the US, you can get a Buell Firebolt a couple years old dirt cheap (< 2,000) They're a 500 CC single cyl bike that is light, maneuverable and easy to fix.

No matter what you do, start out under 750-800 CC's. Lighter is better for a starter and take a rider safety course.

Try a Honda 600. That's what I used. It's big enough to be a real bike, but not so small that you think you're riding a scooter.

Zx-14. Just don't drive it into a wall at 200mph. Drive it down a dragstrip at 200mph.

Kawasaki Vulcan Classic 900 I have the 05 800 (they don't make them anymore) This is considered a mid-sized motorcycle but alot of people, including myself, say that it has plenty of power & torque. My wife and I ride in the mountains and the power is there. Besides, the price is great.

hey buddy i started on a gsxr 600 and it does well over 200 but the thing that you might want to think about a bike only goes as fast as you want it to go and the other thing is that if you buy to small youll have to buy somthing bigger when you are comfertable on the slower bike

i would go with the gsxr 600 but that guy is full of sht they dont do over 200 bikes made today are limited at 186 mph because the speed race between companies was gettin alot of unskilled, and skilled riders killed, it might mechanicaly do 200 or above (i doubt) but it wont get there cause its limited

Suzuki GSXR six hundred, Yamaha R6, or Honda CBR600RR, they're all cool and extremely solid motorcycles little doubt. even nonetheless, they gets you in difficulty even killed once you're a newbie, with precise speed 180mph or greater on a Honda CBR600RR race music waiting. i understand they're cool, yet guy face the certainty. decide for a Ninja 250ex. i understand they're like toys yet they're plenty greater forgiving. you're no longer likely to drop them reason they simply have 300lbs dryweight, in contrast to an GSXR600R a minimum of 400lbs. Ninja 250ex is it sporty looking besides. reassess your decision. you could continuously improve to a greater physically powerful bike once you're certainly waiting for them. you may stay alive to stay on the bike.
