1. Go to Start > Run
2. Type msconfig
3. Go to the tab labeled Startup
4. From the list below, find Yahoo Messenger. It may not be called that.
5. Uncheck the box next to it.
6. Close msconfig. You do not need to restart when it prompts you to.
7. The next time you turn on your computer, a window will come up telling you that you changed something. Uncheck the box that says "Show Configuration Utility on Startup"

Some of the above responses are not addressing your question in my opinion, because they are about whether you sign in or not, not about the program starting up. Here is a sure way to stop the program from starting up when you turn on your computer.
Click on the Start menu and choose Run. Type in msconfig. A window will come up. Choose the Startup tab (over to the right). Look for YahooMessenger and uncheck the box next to it.

Go to Messenger on your Yahoo Messenger>look for prefrences and click on it>once the prefrences window appears look for General on the left hand side> Look for When I start up my computer and click the checkmark box to make sure there is no checkmark in the box for Automatically start Yahoo! Messenger with Voice>if the box is empty Yahoo! Messenger will now stop opening up with Windows.
Also if you want to get technical go to Start>Run>type in msconfig>once a new window pops up click on the Start Up tab>look for ypager on the left hand side and uncheck that box to make it empty>once that is done click apply then ok>once you do this a window will pop up asking you to restart Windows this is not necessary just click Do Not Restart and continue working on your current things but if you feel better you may restart your PC.

This is one of the check boxes available for you to select or deselect when the application launches. Just deselect the one that asks if you want Messenger to start with Windows.
BTW... This is something that you really could have taken care of yourself if you had simply looked at the screen and READ the options.
