The song was Jim's descriptive narrative of his personal LSD trip.

The song was inspired by the book "The doors of perception: heaven and hell" by Aldous Huxley. Same book that inspired the band name. It's about taking drugs (specifically mescaline and acid) and breaking through the doors of perception.

It sounds like "the other side" is heaven...so he's remembering all the things he did in life before he died or something like that.
