No recommendations, please! Just a simple ansewer will do. I have an Aureal Vortex 1, which I bought several years back. It's made by Aureal, and is not a copy with an Aureal chipset

You can produce music with any soundcard, including one that's built into the motherboard. The problem is the quality of the sound. You are NOT going to get very good sound from that sound card. There may be worse, but it's nowhere near the best; not even close. Look here (no recommendations, just a good website): http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=57 and look in the $100-200 range, and you'll get 6-8X the quality of the AC-97 audio converters on your Aureal.

processor is what you should worried about. you could produce music with no sound card at all. as long as the sound card works, itll do what you need.
