It depends on the lie and consequently, the truth. If the smiling lie is kept until the end, then maybe I like that one better. If too many tears come from the truth, there could come bigger troubles than just believing a lie, right?

Depends on the circumstances and the repercussions. Sometimes the truth is hard, but it still must be told. Other times, nothing is gained by telling someone the truth if it's negative, other than hurting the person you're telling.

It's too easy to stand on the moral principal that "I" should never tell a lie, without regards to the affect the truth may have on someone else. I walk away self-righteous while they were devastated.

In most cases, the truth is always best, but when you know it may hurt someone, weigh the consequences first. If I had a friend who had died and his wife asked if he had ever cheated, and I knew he had on an occasion, I would tell her no. What would be gained by saying yes and if I declined to answer, it would have obviously been taken as yes. I'll risk getting caught in the lie hoping she never really finds out the truth because she would be more at peace accepting what I told her.

Everyone says they want the truth, but most like to live in the lie. It feels good. But I guess honestly, in time, the truth. Because the longer you live in the lie the tears of the truth turn into agony and pain.

The truth. Tear or not it is the best way to go. If you lie and get found out you will look like and ***. I also agree that a smile will disappear when you get caught lying.

I'd go with a truth that draws a tear, and then I'd be the shoulder to cry on.

Otherwise, that smile will turn to anger and loss of trust.
