People create Viruses and other Malware because there A@@ WHOLES!!!! <--(nothing else can be said)

If you don't check for viruses and other malware then don't cry when you have to pay someone like me a $100.00 or more to fix your computer and you lose ALL YOUR DATA!!!!

With AVG (and others) you can set it to auto scan anytime of the day. I even let it run while I use the computer, but it is a little slower to use then.

If your NOT using some kind of protection software even if not those FREE ones listed below I won't feel sory for you WHEN you get infected.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

You don't have time to check for viruses?!? hmmm... then you better set aside money to hire someone else to do it for you... oh.. and ... uhmmm.. make sure all of your data is backed up on floppies (anyone use those anymore?) or on CD's .. or onto DVD's... yeah.. right.. on a Flash memory device... ok.. tha's where you save them...

why do people write viruses? hmmm.. because they CAN.. and they have one of many reasons....

1 Getting even with Microsoft for not hiring them... after all, they are a fantastic programmer.. ok.. a little unstable.. but they REALLY WANTED THAT JOB!!!

2 Got fired from Microsoft

3 Just found out how to create them in college programming class... and they're not mature enough to NOT MAKE ONE.

4 their government offers a reward... and protection from prosecution for anyone that causes the USA (and allies) headaches on the internet.

5 Protection for stolen software... (if it is not running on the correct computer.. checked by serial number... then a virus wipes out the computer to ensure stolen software is not used)

Most antivirus programs can be set for live (real time) scanning. That means you don't have to do anything unless it finds a virus.

Some people just like to cause problems for others. Or they like the challenge of defeating antivirus programs.

A virus can cause your computer to crash. If that happens, you might have to spend a lot more time reformatting and reinstalling your operating system, not to mention trying to recreate your personal settings and programs. It takes a lot less time to install an AV program.

If you install linux on your machine you don't need to worry about viruses, you can dual boot if you need MS windows software & only go on the internet with linux. I only use linux & don't even have anti virus software installed, just a firewall.

make time to check your computer every day! especially if you surf the web.... you wont like your computer crashing because you were too busy to maintain it!
go to www.grisoft.com and download the free version of AVG.. you can set it to check your computer daily, and it runs in the background, so you dont have to wait for the scan to finish....
