will consumers be willing to pay more for a firewire port for faster transfer rates?Why or why not?

A lot of older devices still use serial - such as some GPS units, external fax modems and such. Most new devices are using the usb or firewire standard, so you'll probably see a gradual phase out of serial and parallel ports. It'll go the way of the 5 1/4 floppy drive.

Already has (to some extent). My Dell laptop has 6-USB ports, but no serial or parallel.

Because the protocol is so universal, quick, and easy, it's actually much cheaper to implement and reduces costs to the consumer.
