Here it is different, my wages are about double what the independents get paid. Most dealerships think of the technicians as an investment, they spend lots of money on keeping us trained on the newest models, special tools, etc. so they don't want to just give up a good tech. A dealership will have the best technicians, no doubt, they work on your particular brand of vehicle all day, every day.

Of course there are good mechanics at dealers. Customers pay a premium for the assurance that their cars are being handled by the very people who designed it. If there were going to be problems, they can handle it -- they got the parts and the know-how.

Not all good mechanics are good entrepreneurs. Of course you can always make more money working by building your own company -- if you know what you're doing. But if what you do best is fixing cars and not worrying too much about financial statements, suppliers, customer relations, marketing, competition, taxes and other administrative items, then you're better off as an employee.

Hm you might have a point my cousin's husband made more money not working for a dealership and he makes sure it is done by triple checking.
