Your vehicle will hold 3 lbs 4 oz of R-12 refrigerant, but in order to purchase R-12 at the parts store you will have to show that you have an A/C license, it is strictly regulated now and expensive.

you need to buy a pressure gage..because if you use too much it could overflow into other valves...generally all you need is a 1 or 2 cans. Go to your local auto parts store, someone there will be able to help.

And it's not against the law to buy freon...it's sold to the public by stores such as Auto Zone and Advanced Auto Parts

Generally you fill it with air conditioning turned on while viewing the glass port on the high side(sometimes near the dryer) when then fluid going by quits passing bubbles it's full. The rest is all for show or diagnostics(guages etc).
