i came out the beginning of last year. i was 17. my life is so much better now. i always felt that my mom was distant from me and when i finally told her, everything changed. She said "now my son is being honest with me". She said i was basically lying to her face the whole time because she always knew. I dont smash the whole gay thing into my parents face bc my dad is still a lil wishy washy but he loves me. i bring a guy home and i can see him kinda squirm. i am so thankful i told them! : )

I didn't think at the time it was that big a deal, but I think that it was the main cause of some serious problems with my parents. It was like by hiding that part of me, I ended up closing off the rest of me as well. Things got a LOT better after I came out. I'm 20 now, I came out halfway through freshman year of college (puts me at 18).
As far as my friends; not much changed. All my friends ended up being cool (3 of the five of this one group of us ended up being gay or bi; we outnumbered the straights!). We all did the summer-after-graduation-coming-out thing. About the same with my brothers (they're all older and don't live with me anymore; don't see them all that often anyway). I think I told them just this past year. Good luck.
I will say that visibility and acceptance does come with its price; you have to be a little more responsible now. It's not just innocent to have a guy friend sleeping over anymore. And if you're visibly queer (wearing a rainbow or gay-friendly shirt), you can't check out guys unnoticed, and you'll have to be prepared to deal with whatever consequences that brings about (usually the worst I've gotten when I forget I'm wearing a certain t-shirt is a dirty look here and there). Just something to consider, and by no means am I saying the closet is preferable.

I came out at 13 years old -- now I'm 23. It definitely changed my life. If I could re-do the situation -- I think I would have waited a little longer -- there were so many issues that were presented because of my coming-out, and it just was not such a positive experience for me. Now, I'm fine -- and I don't care what anybody has to say -- it's my life -- I'm more . . . developed -- and I've realized I don't need anybody else to accept me. As long as I do -- I'm fine.

I came out at age 39 and YES - it change my life (for the better) because now it is MY life and not me living according to someone else's rules and expectations. I will not go into details, but i fought for many years who I really was and as a result I became depressed and was on medication. Since coming out I am happy with me for the first time - the people in my life either love me for who I am or they never really loved me at in the first place (they just loved the idea of who they wanted me to be at the time).

Good for you! I'm glad you finally did it!
Where have you been? We have been missing you for a while.
I came out when I was 35, and it felt as if the weight of two worlds was lifted off my shoulders. The two worlds were both unreal worlds; one was my false straight self, and the other was my false gay self. The false gay self took a little while to shake off, and yours might too, but I hope not. Enjoy your new life!

I came out when I was 23. It was difficult and a struggle, but I feel so much better for it. I respect myself more for it.
