The Holy Grail is generally considered to be the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and the one used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch his blood as he hung on the cross. This significance, however, was introduced into the Arthurian legends by Robert de Boron in his verse romance Joseph d'Arimathie,which was probably written in the last decade of the twelfth century or the first couple of years of the thirteenth.
Origin:
The term "grail" comes from the Latin gradale, which meant a dish brought to the table during various stages (Latin "gradus") or courses of a meal.

Apparently you don't watch the History channel on TV. If you did you'd know because they have "time fillers" they air between regular programming and the history of the Holy Grail has been repeated dozens of times. However, since you've asked, here's the scoop;
The Holy Grail is a drinking cup. The only difference between the Holy Grail and any other cup is the fact that the Holy Grail was "supposedly" used by Jesus at the last supper. It's whereabouts is unknown now, and was probably never considered holy until long after it disappeared. Logic will tell you it would be impossible to ID any particular cup if it was mixed in with a dozen other cups when someone did the dishes after the last supper, right? l

The creation of a 12th century poet associated with the Knights Templar who based it on legends from the British Isles. That is why it associated with Arthur, and why there is no mention anywhere prior to that time.
