it sucks having to use my history page to get back where i was before, i dont believe i've changed any settings.

Because you haven't reinstalled Internet Explorer yet.

and because there is no back button for life.

Usually, the Back arrow disappears when a link you click on opens in a new window. Since you are then on a new window, there is no window to go back to.

Of course, this happens in other browsers as well. But I wonder if the phenomenon of opening links in a new window has been restricted to your use of IE for some reason (maybe you have open-link preferences set differently in your other browsers).
