suing a credit card over their rules, I get a check for a buck? Isn't the paper + the postage worth more than the check?

The lawyers won the lawsuit, not you. I've 'won three class action suits. So far I've yet to see one that was worth the postage to inform me that the suit existed. The claimed that when the credit card company said "payments are applies to different types of balance at the banks discretion" it wasn't clear that meant "in what ever order makes the most money for the bank".

A class action suit is filed on behalf of everyone affected. At the end of years of litigation, the award (after costs) is split among the thousands or tens of thousands of people who were certified into the class.

Sometimes it is only nominal damages (a buck), but the main purpose of the litigation was to get an injunction or other equitable relief forcing the defendant to stop whatever the bad activity was.

The victory is not always the check. Sometimes it's knowing that a wrong was righted, and justice prevailed.

But yeah, a bigger check would be nice too.

Probably, but basically you are splitting the judgement--the amount of the "win"--with everyone else involved in the same class action suit, and they are required by the court to pay. So if you have 50,000 co-plaintiffs (not an unreasonable number with a credit card company) and the judgement is $50,000, you each get a buck.

Stupid, but that's how it works.

LOL. Most likely it is, yes, but they are obliged to pay out. Class action suits, depending on how many plaintiffs are attached and what the amount of damages sought is, often don't pay out a whole lot. It's just posturing against a corporation to force them to change policies.

class action only the benefit the lawyers who file them who rake in hugh fees on the settlement, so weather you want such an action filed is no the point, it what they can shake out of the settlement that matters to the lawyer filing the suit

Yes it is!

class action is made by final decision to award the total amount of irresponsibility due for damage not punitive consideration

Yes, but the paper trail is worth a lot more.

Class action suits usually have so many claiments that that's all you get once everything is said and done.
