so now theoretically I could get married to a woman in the states and then stay there , is that correct?

Not really. I mean, well, yes. In the state of Massachusetts, you could marry a woman. But only if you lived in Massachusetts, and most of the other states would refuse to recognize that marriage. Also, for any federal government rights and responsibilities, like the Income tax, or social security benefits, the Federal government would not recognize your marriage.
Canada is a better shot for you.

The only state in the US that sanctions same-sex marriage is Massachusetts, with that being said, same-sex married couples in MA have NO federal recognition. With just the information you provided, I would have to say, "No".

In canada it is legal for now, in the u.s to my knowledge gay people are looked down upon if they try to get married.
