SQL or SeQuel ... standards for Structured Query Language. It's an ANSI standard langauge (Cisco considers it a protocol like HTTP even) used for obtaining data from a data source.

SQL Server from Microsoft has support for ANSI SQL, but expands it to T/SQL, or Transact SQL.
