What moves do you think the Phillies would have to make to qualiy for the playoffs?

Any of the above may help, but they have a lot of teams to climb over for the wild card, and their pitching is just so suspect:

Get great value for Abreu --either a true leadoff man, so you can move Rollins down, and Utley to 3rd, etc... (if you keep Abreu, have the guts to move him to leadoff)

I know it's not all Manuel's fault, but replace him with any good baseball man in the interim.

Wake Pat Gillick out of his stupor....perhaps, take anything for Pat Burrell....sacrifice the occasional homer and rbi for better d, more contact, and better attitude.

If all else fails, petition a minor league for the right to appear in
their playoffs.

(And, I'm a lifelong, and long-suffering Phils fan)

The Fillies need to get some starting pitching that can go deep into games and relievers who don't come in and immediately give up the lead. Then trade Abreu and Burrell and let young guys who HUSTLE and PLAY HARD, like Victorino and Dellucci play. Then look at third base and catcher...Bell and Lieberthal are getting long in the tooth and will retire soon, although Cost MIGHT work out. Finally , fire Jolly Cholly Manuel...he's a nice guy, but he's not a good manager. Besides, Gillick threw this season out when he was hired, he's said that he's looking to build the team for 2007 and beyond.

They certainly need a starting pitching. The hitting is fine, but Lidle is just a pedestrian starter, and Madson isn't really ready for starting pitching duties. In addition, Tom Gordon may tire towards the end of the season. I really think, though, that the Phils may be sellers rather than buyers at the trade deadline - they would be happy to deal Abreu, Burrell, or even Gordon if they could get some prospects. I wouldn't plan on buying Phillie playoff tickets in 2006.
