How To Change Your Account Password:
From the Control Panel, select the Change Password icon. The Change Password screen will pop up.
Enter your old password in the first field. Enter your new password in the second field. Re-enter the new password exactly the same way in the third field.
IMPORTANT: your new password must be 6-8 characters long - no more, no less.
Select the Submit button. A message appears stating: "Password Change Accepted. Password change will take effect within the next 10 minutes."
To return to the main Control Panel page, select the Control Panel link located in the right corner of the top upper frame

Step 1.
To set BIOS password:
When computer starts to boot up it will give you a message similar to: "To enter Setup/BIOS/(or whatever) press ..." Press that key - it is usually Ins, F1 or Del.
In the BIOS menus you will have the option to set a password for booting the computer and a password to enter the BIOS SETUP program again.
Warning: If you forget the password, you will need to open your chassis and play inside to reset it.
If you do not place a password for BIOS, every more experienced user will be able to penetrate into your system no matter what OS you are using.
Step 1b
While in the BIOS Setup program, make sure that booting from floppy and CD/DVD drives is disabled. If they are not, anyone can bring a bootable CD/DVD/floppy and access all your data.
Step 2.
Add password to all accounts in your OS.
For Windows, you have the answers above this post.
For GNU/Linux and other Unix-like OSs, use the command passwd.
Step 3.
If you have multi-boot (multiple Operating Systems installed), add a password to the boot loader too.
Step 4.
Add a lock to your chassis if you do not already have one and lock it so nobody can do the Warning part from Step 1 and reset the BIOS password.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The only way to reset your windows password 100% safe is to use a software called Reset Password Pro.
The software allows you to create a boot-disk, that can be made on a CD/DVD or USB stick. The boot-disk can then be inserted into any locked machine, and it's a simple case of pressing reset. Here is their official site: http://www.resetwindowspass.com

Go to "Start", "Control Panel", "User Account". Find the correct "Computer Administrator", and then click on "Change Password". Note to self, write down your password, otherwise you will have to reformat if you forget it.
