If you decide to use baking soda on your teeth, please be aware it is an abrasive substance that can scratch tooth enamel that can then lead to more staining. It also has a high sodium content which can be dangerous for some people

Besides that, I've heard it tastes yucky.

Like they say, sprinkle it over toothpaste (on your brush) and the taste won't be as pungent. The results should be immediate, although I don't know if using baking soda is a long term solution for plaque. Also, I personally recommend Ultrabrite brand of toothpaste if you are looking for a good toothbrush whitener. The whitening version of Ultrabrite was recently recommended as a Consumer Reports best buy. It's pretty cheap as toothpastes go.

# Baking Soda is a great teeth whitener. Sprinkle a little on your toothbrush before the paste goes on..

# Baking soda is also great to use as a toothpaste/mouthwash. Just wet your toothbrush, dip in baking soda and brush. Or dissolve a little in warm water and gargle. NOT FOR EVERYONE, but if you add just a little peroxide to you baking soda and brush with it, it will help whiten teeth.

I assume you mean using it mixed with water to make a paste to brush with? It doesn't actually "whiten" your teeth but it does buff out certain surface stains.

I mix it with peroxide, but don't use it everyday because it can burn your gums.
