I'd like to know what to look for, what wood provides for a better sound or what are the differences between them, what provides for a better aesthetic, etc. I would also appreciate recomendations of manufacturers. Thanks!

Seriously, I am wondering why someone who doesn't appear to know much about guitars would order a custom made guitar. I guess money is no object? However, if you are determined to do this and you are getting an electric I would look at Carvin, they have a wide variety. You have to consider the pick ups -- single coil or humbucking solid body versus semihollow or hollow, fingerboard, woods, etc. It really would be better for you to go to a music store and check out guitars and talk to a knowlegable person before you order anything.

This IS a tough question! I started playing a crummy, cheap 6-string generic at the age of 12, while my 15 y.o. kid (who's like the 2nd Mozart) is already outstripping his bass lessons after 5 mos. and the basic Strat (with a whammy bar- bown-da-down-dawn-dow!) I bought him 5 yrs. ago.

If you're really good...go with it, I say! Sell whatever you have to, but decide (for now) what type of music you like and start sounding out other guitarists for feedback (Hyuk...no pun intended), as to what guitar best matches your style.

I thoroughly agree wi/the guy who said it depends what kind of music you like! If it's country, go w/a hollow-body. If it's hard rock...give in, like Wayne and get that White Stratocaster inside the plexiglas! Then start cranking away on Stairway. If it's classic rock...I'm a sucker for a Gretsch...

You'll probably change over the yrs., if you stick with it...and that IS the toughest thing, for most people (IMO). Just....PLEASE don't do a Rondstadt and switch styles every 6 mos. to please...um...whomEVER she's pleasing!

Please YOURSELF!!! (A naked Indian told me that!)

Maple neck
A single coil and a dual coil humbucking pickup
Light gauge high strings, heavier gauge bass strings
Are you ordering a Carvin guitar?
