I think it has something to do with the high intensity of both emotions, and the fact that both love and hate are highly irrational mental states that resemble addiction on PET scans

B/C both emotions are so strong, and even though you love someone, you HATE them at the same time!!!

I was married for years knowing that I hated my spouse, yet loved him at the same time...

Sad isn't it? :(
