I will be moving to the New York city area soon, as my job will be in Manhattan, and I'm wondering -- hoping? -- that there are any safe and less expensive places to live that are near the city, where one could take the subway into Manhattan for work etc.

Basically, I'm looking for the least expensive places to live in one of the 5 boroughs or even outside of it, as long as I'd be able to still commute to Manhattan without a car.

While I don't expect a bargain, I figure it would probably save some money to live outside of the main parts of the city, and any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Best places to live other than the city is Queens, it is easy to commute to the city using the E train. Rego park is a good safe neighborhood as well as forest hills (bit pricy but very very good) kew gardens, woodhaven, and glendale are also very good. for a one bedroom in forest hills it could be anywhere from 800 and up.

Depending on what you're looking for and your circumstances (studio, one bedroom, pets. kids, etc.) you might luck into a really good deal in Manhattan--check Craigslist for the neighborhoods near your workplace or an easy commute away. I'd consider areas that bump up against the trendier neighborhoods--Chinatown, Lower East Side for example.

Also Midtown and the Wall Street/City Hall area might have good residential bargains because they don't have that neighborhood feel (few delis, groceries, food delivery places)....at least not yet!

Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island are good, but factor in the cost of the commute. If its just a trainride away, thats fine, but when you start thinking of commuter trains (as for Long Island) or commuter buses (Staten Island, parts of Queens) then the cost goes up considerably. My personal recommendation for Queens would be stops along the 7 train--the ones closest to the city have gone through a bit of a revival when MoMA was temporarily housed there (causing many Manhattanites to discover the 7 train) Sunnyside is a safe area, so are Woodside, Elmhurst....Flushing (the last stop) has gotten kind of pricey.

If you're open to it, expand your housing search to Jersey City, Hoboken or Newark. They're accessible by Path train, which costs even less than the NY subway and goes directly to the Financial area, 34th street or the Village!

Riverdale!!! I live in Riverdale, it is an oasis in the the Bronx, NY. It is much more affordable that Manhattan, very safe. If you are Jewish or Russian you will love it here! Very strong Jewish/Israeli population and the Russian embassy workers live in Riverdale. Great restaurants. Express bus to Manhattan located everywhere.Close to Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens and Wave Hill. feel free to e-mail me, I'd be more than happy to tell you more. I know an awesome RE agent.

If you don't mind the commute, Long Island may be good. The further east (until Moriches) the less expensive. The local papers (Pennysaver,Yankee Trader,Suffolk Life, etc) have apartment ads in them. The commute is easy. the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) will take you directly into Penn Station.
