To allow the exhaust gases to exit the engine more quickly. The more exhaust you can push out with less backpressure, will allow the engine to "breathe" better and take in more cool intake air into the cylinders for combustion.

Having more outlet for the exhaust generally means less backpressure. A freer flowing exhaust increase horsepower and performance. However, some people put a dual exhaust on for purely cosmetic reasons, be it for looks or sound. Either way, this can actually rob power if it adds length to the exhaust gases exiting from the car. When done properly, dual (or more!) exhaust can makle a definite increase in performance.

The purpose is to prevent the exhaust pressure from one side of the engine from keeping the exhaust gases from exiting the other side of the engine. This is if it is a V-shaped engine, because most of the cylinders fire opposite of each other in the firing order. But cylinders on the same side do fire consequetively sometimes so it is not %100 efficient unless special exhaust Headers are installed that use longer pipes for certain cylinders to make up for that. PLus it sounds a lot better.

From what I understand by listening to a lot of racers, twin exhausts tespond to the 4 time engine. The four times are intake, compress, expand (an explosion), exhaust in a repeating action. This is what happens to air as it flows through the engine. Notice that intake and exhaust are together in the cycle once it repeats. Before the engine can let more fresh air in, the used air needs to be released (just like all living things). Twin exhausts release that air a lot quicker (like exhaling trough your mouth) and the process repeats a lot faster without running out of air (or breath).

mainly looks when it comes to most cars 4 cyl and v6. The only vehicles that need it are true dual exhausts like from a v8 . increased air flow for a bigger engine.
