Do you want a road to drive your car on?

If so, who pays for it?

Wait...I just had a thought....No taxes, no military forces. No military forces, no war....Interesting

If you go to see a movie and you pay (for example) $7 to get into the theatre, there are exactly three possible outcomes. 1) If you come away from the show feeling that it wasn't worth the $7 you spent, the theatre got the better end of the deal. 2) If it was a great movie worth far more than $7, then you got the better end of the deal. 3) If the movie was worth exactly $7 to you, then it was a good trade and both parties profited.

If you pay, over the course of a year, $4000 worth of taxes, there are exactly the same three possible outcomes. 1) If you receive less than $4000 worth of goods and services, the government got the better end of the deal. 2) If you receive move than $4000 worth of goods and services from the government, you got a good deal. 3) If you receive exactly $4000 worth of governmental goods and services, then it was a worthwhile trade.

However, there is an important difference. You have a choice about whether or not to go to the movie. You do not have a choice about whether or not to pay taxes. If you fail to pay your taxes, the government will charge you a fine. If you fail to pay the fine, you will be threatened. If you still fail to pay anything, armed representatives will show up to collect. If you resist, you will be shot.

The decision of whether or not to pay taxes is not a moral or ethical choice that you make. It's what you have to do to keep very bad things from happening to you. If you are suddenly in a bad accident (without insurance) and you find that you must pay a doctor to sew you up again, would you say it is wrong because it's like paying for your life? If you are incidentally born into a nation ruled by a band of thugs that calls itself "the government" would you say it is wrong to pay them "protection money?"

In short, you should not have any feeling of guilt for paying taxes. It is the government that should feel guilty for extorting it from you. Do what you can (vote, lobby, etc.) to reduce taxation to a minimum, or eliminate it if you can. In the meantime, pay up or you'll wish you would have.

Taxes are a pain, but they are also helpful. It is a shame that too much of our taxes go for the wrong things, but roads and education are some of the better things. I wish that more of the population could qualify for the medical cards, because between taxes and insurance it's pretty hard to live life. I don't find it right that even if you own your own home that the government can take YOUR home if you don't pay your taxes, just like any government there are always going to be major flaws, nothing is ever perfect or satisfactory for everyone.

Paying taxes is a priviledge. Boy this should get the worms out of the wood work. Just look at Samolia. Don't you bet they would like to have enough money to pay taxes? How about Cuba? No taxes and everything for everyone is equal. No one gets anything... You can live tax free in North Korea. That is if you can find anything to eat. Taxes are unheard of in the Central African Republic. However, so are things like electricity and indoor plumbing. I agree that many of our taxes are wasted on things like a senatorial parking place for Hillary Clinton, welfare , medicade for illegal immigrants, assistance to Fiji, and the supreme court and most of all the United Nations. However, our corrupt/unholy/subversive/repressive government can not exist without the few of us who pay taxes. I know that I am to blame for Iraq, the invasion of Lebanon by Israel, high oil prices, and global warming. But I will continue to pay taxes and live the American Dream.

Until we start getting what we pay for, we should all stop paying taxes. And stay home from work. Then this crap will start getting fixed really quick. Don't worry. I guarantee you that you won't miss a whole paycheck. It won't take but about one day.

On everything else under the sun, if you don't get what you pay for, you can take it back or stop making payments until it is taken back. Do you honestly believe your "elected" officials are acting in your best interests and those of your family? Did you want the prices on everything essential to go up because of deregulation? Do you want to pay that much at the pumps, not because of the price of a barrel of oil, but because the vast majority of that price is taxes? Was it your decision to cut off the flow of affordable generic medicine so that your elderly folks or your sick kid could stay healthy, or maybe just stay alive?

Did you say, "Gee, it's a real shame. Those poor insurance companies work so hard for their money. I think I'll let them charge me a lot more and if they rob me or deny my medical claims and one of the kids or I die, I think it would be a real good idea if none of us could ever sue them. They work too hard for their money and I don't. The same with the electric and phone company and the oil refinery and the natural gas company. Why shouldn't they be able to charge me a lot more for less? I've got so much to spare and they have so little. "

How about, "Those poor rich people have it all so rough. I think it would be real nice if they didn't have to pay any taxes when their parents die. They should just get to keep it all, every last cent. I love them so much I'll pay it for them and they can even keep on charging me my taxes when my parents die. I'm not rich so I'm not worth it. The same with the dividend tax. Those poor, poor rich people, always doing without."

"Sure, our air, food, soil, and water are almost too clean. Lets let it all go to hell, the way it was back in the 1960s. Why, some days are so clear I can barely see the lovely Smog Line. And that really ticks me off. And take those stinkin' trees with you."

"Gee. I think it wouild be a really great idea to let our schools and hospitals go to hell, too, and we should cut our police departments and fire stations down to the bone so that we can build all new better ones over in Iraq. That would be so nice of us."

"Social Security and Medicare? What is this, some kind of communist country? Hell no, I don't want that. Let George spend it on a really nice war or two someplace that has lots of oil. And this time, let's double the price of gasoline after we do it. We really screwed up back when his dad was vice-president and we did this same thing twice and the gas price actually dropped. That was stupid. Why should I pay less when I can pay more? Let's see... it was a buck-eighty a gallon when we went in on March 18 of 2003 and it's three-ten a gallon now... sounds about right. We have to pay for the war somehow, don't we? What? We already paid for it once with our taxes? Hell, I don't care. Keep it. You deserve a nice tip for being so creative with all the fake intelligence and aluminum-doohickeys and the WMDs and stuff. You really had me fooled."

"It's just a shame that we have that dusty old Consitution and Bill of Rights still hanging around, always getting in the way. It's about time somebody threw all that old trash out. And to think, so many people died over the years for junk like that. Arlington and every cemetery in the Nation are full because of that. It's about time somebody threw that in the trash. Somebody could have got hurt."

"Well, I almost had enough to pay bills and eat this week. I hope somebody comes and swipes that last ten dollars I have hidden pretty soon. The suspense is killing me."

Let's just stop making payments and maybe somebody will come and repossess George and all the rest sometime soon, including most of the democrats. Sure would be a shame if we had some people in there that actually looked out for us.

It's been so long since we actually had anybody looking out for us that we might not know how to act anymore. We might even forget and accidentally have some fun again once in awhile, the way we used to. Wouldn't that be a real shame?

Sure, who the hell needs police and fire department? I can do without just fine.
And what if my country gets invaded? Its OK i don't need a military to protect me. I will be just fine. When foreign soldiers kill my father and rape my wife -- I can just smile and think to myself: "well this is not THAT bad, at least I did not have to pay taxes for the military!"

Welcome to society -- you pay taxes -- government does useful stuff.

If you hate taxes so much you can always move to Greenland or to western Sahara.

To McNeef:
You forget that we live in a democracy, if EVERYONE is unhappy about taxes, why not vote for somebody who will lower them? So if this does not happen it means that MOST people are happy with the tax rate.
So sure it is not as easy as movies, but tax rate can be changed.

No, I think paying some taxes benefits the services the country gives us. However, I do disagree with how some of my taxes are spent. I guess it doesn't really matter what we think though - we're always going to have to pay taxes!

No, it's not wrong to pay taxes, as our taxes support the programs we rely on...But it is wrong for Government to waste our tax money on things that mean nothing to average people, like the huge salaries & raises & benefits for those in the Senate, Congress & House, who are supposed to be "public servants"...

Some degree of taxes are necessary to operate a government. Some form of government is necessary to maintain a society. That said, I think our system of taxation need serious reform and the level is to high.
