One song that makes me want to cry is the one by Garth Brooks called "The Dance". I had a teacher who once told us that her husband committed suicide and every time she heard this song it made her think of him because she always asked herself if she'd of "missed the dance in order to miss the pain"... in the end she decided that she’s glad she “didn’t know the way it all would end, the way it all would go, as our lives are better left to chance, I could’ve missed the pain, but I’d of had to miss the dance”…

"Unbreak my heart" by Toni Braxton cause the first time I heard it was when my son was watching music videos and I had just woke up and I thought "that's a really sad song", it wasn't long after it came out that he commited suicide, he was only 17.

What hurts the most- rascall flatts

Artist: Rascal Flatts
Song: What Hurts The Most
Album: Rascal Flatts
[Buy "Rascal Flatts" CD]

I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don’t bother me
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out
I’m not afraid to cry every once in a while
Even though going on with you gone still upsets me
There are days every now and again I pretend I’m ok
But that’s not what gets me

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was tryin’ to do

It’s hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go
But I’m doin’ It
It’s hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I’m alone
Still Harder
Getting up, getting dressed, livin’ with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart
That I left unspoken

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

What hurts the most
Is being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do

Not seeing that loving you
That’s what I was trying to do

There are two that always cause tears to come to my eyes.

1. Skye Boat Song (Scotland)

2. Highland Cathedral (Scotland)

The second one especially and when sung by Moira Kerr, the Celtic Songtress of Scotland, my poor, weary heart truly breaks out of love for the mystical land of my ancestors and for the unknown kinsmen and kinsladies I have still living there from 270 years ago when my ancestors departed in haste following the defeat of the armies of Bonnie Prince Charles Stuart.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share this part of me with the world--even nameless as I must remain. (Hint--Liddesdale has a special geographic meaning for my people.)

"Where've You Been" by Kathy Mattea. It's a song about a the love between a husband and wife over the years. The final verse, in which it tells of them living on different floors of a nursing home, absolutely kills me. I also agree with others about the Star Spangled Banner and certain hymns.

Thanks for sharing your teacher's story, Stewie....it was beautiful. Don't let anybody rag on you for being a little sappy with this question. Everyone has a soft side....you're just secure enough to show it !

I feel like I could give a very long list. I have a playlist on my ipod titled "sadness". I took these from that, but there are a lot more. Some aren't really about sadness; just the beauty of the music. I react strongly to some of these because of some connection to my life like the one you described. For others, I don't know. I guess they're just sad songs.

Almost anytime I hear “The Star Spangled Banner”, but especially the version by Whitney Houston.

“Portions for Foxes” by Rilo Kiley (from “Adventurous”)

“Angel From Montgomery” by John Prine, Susan Tedeschi or Bonnie Rait

By Otis Redding (all on the album “The Very Best of Otis Redding”):
“I've Got Dreams To Remember”
“That's How Strong My Love Is”
“I've Been Loving You Too Long”
“These Arms Of Mine”
“Pain In My Heart”
“My Lover's Prayer”

Lucinda Williams
“A Satisfied Mind” (from “Ramblin’”)
“Concrete and Barbed Wire” (from “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road”)

Joan Baez
“Long Black Veil” (from “Joan Baez - in Concert”)
“Banks of the Ohio” (from “Joan Baez, Vol. II”) (also recorded by many others)

Emmylou Harris
“To Daddy” (from “Best Of Emmylou Harris”)
“Making Believe” (from “Best Of Emmylou Harris”)

Aretha Franklin
“Amazing Grace”
“Precious Memories (Live 1972)”

Hank Williams (Hank Williams Sr.; all from “40 Greatest Hits”)
“Weary Blues From Waitin'”
“Take These Chains From My Heart”
“Your Cheatin' Heart”
“Lonesome Whistle (I Heard That)”

man, that is touching. For me, it would be that song by that Hawaiian guy- Israel Kawawawio'ole (spelling), it goes "somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly. and the dream that you dared to oh why, oh why can't I? Well i see trees of green, I see clouds of white. The brightness of day... I like the dark, and I think to myself... what a wonderful world..." I know you've heard it before! It's in a bunch of commercials and movies.

I have no idea who sings it, but it's a country song called "Austin" where the woman broke up with the man, moved to Austin, and then a year later she calls to tell him she was wrong and she still loves him. But he's not home and at the end of his answering machine message, it says "if this is Austin, I still love you".
OMG, I cry....
