Many people in authority cannot handle their power over others, and it goes to their heads. The longer they stay in a position of authority the more powerful they feel. They become snobbish; know-it-alls.
Maybe they feel they need to be this way, in order to survive. I disagree with that attitude.

With all due respect, it's because they know how to spell "they're". A spell check won't help you in this instance, you just gotta know. I don't necessarily think people should be smug about their superior acumen of the English language, but I personally have some respect for our fair tongue. There should be an "English language trashing amendment" to the Constitution. Since people have nothing else to go by except your written word, it helps to present a nice image to your readers. "Authority" is a loaded word though. It suggests they have power over you. Would that your educational "authorities" had better exercised that option.

Pretty simple... because, for the most part, they CAN and they DO. Kinda sucks to be on the wrong end of that. Not saying it's right, but the fact that it's so (and has always been so), should tell you that they're not entirely wrong (not about being better than you, but about thinking they CAN). because they feel they have the right. i'm 17 and i don't let anyone talk down to me. regardless of who they are. school officials, parents and relatives want you to do things to assume responsibility but they refuse to let you be the adult that you are. thankfully, my mum's different and gives me my freedom but i've gotten into plenty of arguments with teachers who've tried to give lip just because they have a degree to their name.. doesn't make them smarter or better, just more educated and older.
