Try and get a job in an office as a receptionist, greeter or file clerk. I started working in an office at 17 (courtesy clerk), worked hard and got promoted or moved on to a better company. By the time I was 21 I was making $40,000, which isn't bad for someone who never attended even 1 day of college.

I worked in the fast food industry twice, once as a cook and once at the till. Stay away from the till. People think that just because you are working at a till, they have the right to take their bad day out on you.
Being a cook was a lot of fun. The work is fast paced (usually) and time seems to go really fast, especially if other young people are working back there. If you are in school they will take that into account and give you time to go home and do homework (usually).
Working at a car wash is pretty slack (usually), if that is what you are looking for and it takes like no skill. Most car washes close down around 9PM (usually) so you can get home and get your homework done. Also free car washes.
Stay away from janitorial, unless you like late nights.

I just quit a job making $13 an hour because it sucked! and so I can tell you-if it's your first job, choose something that even if it doesn't pay the best, it has "opportunity for advancement", or promotions, just go for what you Love, if you love to help people, even bagging groceries with a smile can lead to a $2 raise as stock person and then later to Supervisor and then Manager...it's whatever floats your boat, heck, I'm a woman and I've known grown college men who take an extrat summer job getting paid $7.50 an hour just test new video games, just because it's what they love to do.
