Well human nature is human nature. We were born and made to feel, taste, smell, see and hear. When it comes to being cruel, mean and hurtful, it is a way of expressing our discomfort, emotions and feelings. Sometimes we may not conciously know what we are doing that may be classified as being cruel or mean; but often its not ourselves who classifies this; but other people. Its like using the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but using this in different terms.
Normally expressing this side of 'human nature' is like an outlet for tense or negative feelings one has on another. For example jealousy.
Sometimes its just comes to pyschoanalysis of someone's behaviour or psychology. When you think of these terms, you will understand and analysis why the person's behaving this way and say what triggered it.

its not our fault, nature will always give us something to fight for and we don't all get it, only those strong enough will get there. we each think we deserve to get what ever it is than the other person. its all about competition. i don't blame anything on humans, they do things because they have to, just like animals kill to eat and survive. nature is very cruel to us.
of course we have the power to overcome this, that's why we have invented civilization, but not all humans know about its rules and they are so animal that they refuse to believe it even when you try to teach them.
to see how civilized you are, you need to be able to control yourself. to test this, the next time you get something you really want, refuse it. that way you know when your life gets hard, you can avoid hearting others and overcome your fears. this way you will also be able to beat natures laws which contain killing others too. the more you control your self, the more you can control your surroundings.
the reason i am telling you this is because, if you want a better world, start with your self. take a look at your self very closely. don't ask others to do something you cant do yourself.

hm, good question, and a hard one as well. I think there is an inherent vicious quality in everyone. We, humans, love digging into the dark stuff, just take a look into what makes the headlines, murders, wars, adictions, immorality, hate, racism, xenophobia, insanity...i ll stop now haha. But to get to the point, I think that people , in general, prefer mysteries to obvious truths, and since evil is always mysterious, while good is usually straightforward, we are much more interested in darkness. Now, why some people take darkness a step further and actually harm people, i think probably because as a rule, our actions are guided by the principle of least resistance. We do what is easier to do, what takes less energy. it is a lot harder to make compromises and control our emotions, but it is easy as hell to yell, abuse and harm others.

People are often just so focused on themselves. Everyone has to watch out for themselves, but many are too defensive and can't trust or love others. They withdraw and can't seem to care about anyone but themselves. Cruelty exists because this isolation escalates until they see no good in others, only the worst of their traits and feel that everyone is agaisnt them. Naturally, they retaliate.
