"The Babylonians are credited with having first invented this [below] square root method, possibly as early as 1900 BC.

The Babylonians had an accurate and simple method for finding the square roots of numbers. This method is also known as Heron’s method, after the Greek mathematician who lived in the first century AD. Indian mathematicians also used a similar method as early as 800 BC."

It wasn't invented, but it was certainly discovered long ago. When you arrange sixteen blocks in a square on the floor, you'll have four blocks by four blocks, or 4 x 4 = 16. Go the other way to get the square root; the square root of 16 is 4. People have known about this for ages.

Finding square roots isn't always easy, though. The square root of 25 is 5; that one is easy. But what's the square root of 547829? That's not easy without a calculator. But people have discovered methods for calculating square roots. Somebody here already mentioned Aryabhata. He discovered a method for calculating it, but he didn't discover square roots.
