Without more info on what is wrong with your system, it is hard to help you out. Why do you need to repair it?? And if you do use a CD to repair it, you don't have to worry about losing anything. It will back up the files before it starts anything. What type of file do you wish to save and to what? CD? DVD? external hard drive??

Hi ,
If yours is a Me OS then put a recovery floppy in the floppy drive and the Operating System CD in and restart the system with access to CD Rom drive, dont format the C:drive just go to f: if that is your CD drive letter and type install and when you are asked to keep your old files say yes and continue.
All the best you should be up and running in an hour, if its XP then just use the System restore option it seems to work better than a Me.
