this may work with some bosses: simply delay any response to that hard question, say for about 30 seconds, just staring at him/her, no blinking. the silence becomes uncomfortable and the boss may end up trying to answer his own question.
when it appears that won't work start to make those 'rainman' type noises, repeating phrases over and over again until the boss leaves to call the HR dept.

Like what? Some examples would help. How about these generic responses:
"When? Soon."
"I'm working on it."
"I'm not certain. Let me check into it and I will let you know."
Answering a question with a question is another option:
"Do you want me to look into this and let you know?"
"Shall I made this my top priority?"
Don't lie and don't assume you must have an answer to everything. Your boss needs to know he or she can trust you.

As truefully as possible. It will bit you in the *** later if you dont. If you dont know the answer, tell them that you need time to research and you will get right back to them. Hard questions means they value your answers.
