No problem. the entry rules are very liberal especially for USA citizens who can enter even without a pass port by purchasing a $10 worth I card available at the airport and enter the country on its strength.
For more details look up Sunny Villa Holidays.com and Lovethesun.com They provide all the necessary details.

It should be ok as your passport expires a long time (3 months!).
Remember that you will have to pay Airport Taxes out there (if I remember correctly its $20 going out & $10 coming back to UK but I might have got the figures wrong!).
Also whoever your Tour Operator is...beware of EXCESS Baggage as you are likely to be charged something like £6 for every kilo you are over at the Airport (normally from Dominican Republic airport on your way home when you have ran out of cash!) & they will not waiver the fee & will insist you pay it or airport on your way home when you have ran out of cash!) & they will not waiver the fee & will insist you pay it or you will not be allowed on the flight home. Practically 3 quarters of people on our flight were stung on the way back…some paying almost £100!!!
Hope you have a good time out there…I loved it & been 3 times!

""To enter the Dominican Republic, a Passport must be valid for twice the amount of time the person shall remain in the country (i.e. four weeks from the date of entry if the person remains for two weeks), NOT six months or ten years as is often thought.""

You won't be allowed out of the country with an expired passport. Go renew it before you go on your trip!!
