ok here goes i am not affraid of the dark except when i am alone and then only when i am outside .i have been in the interior of buildings when all the lights have gone out and never felt any fear alone but some times when i am walking outside at night alone i get a sense of panic and hurry back inside except when i walk along the beach .WHEN i walk along the beach i only feel panic as i head away from the ocean and up around other structures which could hide something . AS long as i am in the dark in the open it is ok but the tighter the place the more fear and panic i feel .DOES anyone know how to overcome this sense of fear and panic .I know it is irrational and nothing is there in the dark that is not there in the light.

I think it's more of a subconcious fear (which can be conquered). Our ancestors used to never have lights in the dark, they built fires, but they were still vulnerable at night. Predators attacked us at night and thus probably why most people have a fear of the dark, it's subconcious. You are waiting for something to happen. Movies don't help either which may contribute as well.

That's my theory anyway.

Edit: Trafficker also mentions my idea. I think it's a good reason.

It's natural for a human to fear the dark, though your fear does seem to be a bit excessive. This fear is from when we were still living in the wild, where the dark can hide predators and other dangers. If you fears are affecting your life in a serious way, then I would suggest getting professional help.

With the world the way it is today what you are experiencing is normal, in my opinion. There are so many people who have nothing better to do than to lie in wait for some unexpecting stranger and molest or murder them. I think it is a smart thing for you to be defensive when you are outside in the dark and alone. I know I would be, especially in a large city.

Laugh if you want, but I was afraid of the dark until my dad said, "It's easier to hide from the bad guys in the dark. They can spot you a mile away in the light."

Done laughing? I think what happened was that I changed what I was making up in my mind about what darkness meant. If you view it as something dangerous, your mind will go to work pointing out all the dangers. If you view as something that gives you more freedom to act, then your mind will support that point of view.

No, fear of the dark is rational for most humans but the human race loves darkness so you should embrace it sooner or later like i did spend more time in dark places and maybe you will grow out of your fear

When you aren't in the open you might be scared because you can't tell if anyone or anything is there because it is dark. It would be easy for something to hide. All you have to do is convince yourself that nothing is really there.

There are rational reasons to be afraid of the dark. Most burglaries, rapes, and murders are committed in hours of darkness.

Definitely a control issue. I get panicked sitting in traffic. It's not funny I really do and I know it is because I can't do anything about it but sit there.
