How do I know what I want running at start up?

alot of them are named specifically to be confusing. The best way to do it is to go through and get rid of things that you really recognize first. I'm assuming that you're worried about system startup lag or else you wouldn't be bothering with this. After you do that, look at the "command" column (in WinXP)...this will tell you where the startup .exe command originates, using the path as it is shown here, you can usually tell what application started that .exe is coming from. the name of the program usually follows something like this: C:\Program Files\(NAME OF PROGRAM)\(NAME OF SUBFOLDER)\(NAME OF EXECUTABLE FILE).exe

Read the path name under the command, then you can do a websearch on the executable to find out what it is and does.
Rule of thumb: the location area is blank for an entry decheck it, its likely a virus/spyware of some kind.

It is simple a matter of Trial and Error.

It also shows the file PATH, so when it says:
c:\program files\Norton...
you know that file is a part of Norton Antivirus.

search for file extensions on the net it will tell you what and what program uses it.
