I have a 99 chevy malibu. Whenever I stop at a light I put my car is Park. Recently I have noticed that when I put my car in park and later when the light goes green and I put my car from Park to Drive, the car jerks one time and then moves forward. It has happened 3-5 times. But today the car ran smoothly and I didnt try to put my car in park everytime I stopped at the light. I had my mechanic look at it and he said there is a transmission problem. Is that true? I dont mind showing it to a transmission shop, but I am sure they will try to rip me off.

Any advice or do you know what may be wrong??

Thanks.

Stop putting it in park at red lights. Why you would do this is a mystery... constantly shifting from park to drive is not what the transmission is designed for in my opinion, you've increased the wear on the unit. Smell the oil on the Transmission Dip stick and if it has a sharp, burnt bunent smell then the oil needs changed and a new filter installed. I'd also recommend a transmission oil conditioner used also.

Question is do you press the gas before you put the vehicle back into D? If you are worried about gas mileage then just put your car in nuetral and don't press the gas for another two seconds to be sure the transmission is engaged. But don't shift into and out of park over and over because it can cause damage to your transmission with the sudden shock you put on it over and over again on short drives.

Why are you placing your vehicle in Park at a stop? When you do this you are actually disengaging the connection between the engine and drive wheels and locking the drive axles. When you shift back to Drive, the engine re-engages the drive wheels, and if you are giving it throttle during this shift it will make a helluva bang ---and you can do damage doing that. The Park position is for parking your vehicle and leaving it unattended.

If you don't mind, you can let a tranny shop rip you off.

But I say your transmission should have a fluid and filter change done.

Being a 99, you probably have between 80,000 and 120,000 miles.

It's time to get this done.

Take it to a garage and tell them you just want a transmission fluid and filter change.(Don't let on you aren't a mechanic yourself, or they will find a way to try to hose you. No questions at first.Be confident and short.)

Ask for a price.

Get it done.

Then after it's done go home and call another garage if you have any questions.

Good Luck.

its probably cheaper to get a new car than fix the transmission, I'd personally go with a stick shift they dont have those kinda problems
