the water was not draining out, until we poured baking soda and vinegar into it. How do I fix the disposal so that when I run water the waste is disposed of, instead of it reappearing in my sink basin like an unwelcome guest? Thanks.

most everyone is right you do have a clogged drain

when food and grease build up on a kitchen drain line it restrics the waste water flow rate.. the best way to resolve this is to snake the drain with a power snake

most snakes( drain machines ,electric eel , call them what you want ) can be rented at a local tool rental they come in many sizes and lengths

first find the length of the drain if you have an unfinished basement you can trace the line and get an eyeballs guess on length .....most kitchen sinks are 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter so a 3/8 inch cable should be used that cable can come in lengths of 15 25 50 60 75 feet so rent the right tool for the job at hand

next remove all water from sink basins .... put a pan or container of some sort ( i use a kitty litter pan) under the trap. remove the trap . if there is a two piece trap ( J bend and part that goes back in the wall ) remove both check to see if the removable waste pipes are clogged and if they are clear them.... if not

insert the tip of the cable into the drain line and push by hand for a foot or so . look with a flashlight to see if the cable is headed down ( water flows down )

gloves are needed here do not use house hold rubber or cloth
i use leather work gloves

turn the machine on and slowly feed the cable into the drain
when you have reached the required length of the drain line you can remove the cable from the line and test..... if you are still backed up repeat ( i use a small hose to test instead of putting the pipes back together )

once your draining put you pipes back together and run some water to check for drainage and leaks ...repair any leaks you may have . insert stoppers into each basin and fill to capasity.....once filled let the basins out at the same time ...check under the cabinet for leaks and make any nessessary adjustments

i tried to be as thorough as posible
if any thing is over you head or if you might need help i suggest you call a plumber

here is a good one .....they are the largest in the world so maybee their near you

i hope this helps

There is a piece of plastic that acts like a back-flow preventer that occurs between the disposal and the p-trap. You've got a couple of choices: either limit the type of food you grind up, get a more powerful disposal (that's what I did) or find that diverter and wallow it out a little larger to keep it from clogging so frequently.
Oh, and have a nice day!

Its not the disposal, the drain line is clogged or semi clogged downstream from it.

Try removing the "P-Trap" and washing it out, its actually "U" shaped so don't ask me why its called that :)
Normally its easy, many times you can unscrew it with your hands
But have a bucket handy, its a messy job

Also sounds like you might need a new rubber gasket just inside the hole. Stuff shouldn't shoot up like that.

You have it on backwards.
