Well it's pretty clear you haven't spent much time in a history class. When you use the word "we" I take it you personally fought in the war, is that correct? Now here is a few facts for you at no extra charge. The United States supplied Britain with weapons at NO CHARGE during the first years of the war. Cargo ships landing daily in all the major ports of England supplying the population with food, gasoline, as many items as possible to keep your home lights burning. Where do you think the ammunition and bombs came from or do you think the bullet fairy brought them? In June of 1940 the United States secretly began a major movement of war supplies which, just in case you didn't read it in your British history books, shipped the equipment to make all the runways for all the bombers that were going to be brought over from the States. Again, all that was at NO CHARGE as well. Obviously the United States knew then that they were in the first stages of entering the world, (although by doing all this they were technically involved.)
We or should I say The United States knows all about Dunkirk the North African campaign. And of course we or should I say The United States remembers how Montgomery outfoxed the Desert Fox and also how he had his personal duel with General George Patton. Did you also read how General Patton bailed Ole' Monty out of hot water more than once?? Bet that wasn't in your history books either.
Just so you know, you're way over your head when it comes to this subject. You really should do your home work first before you come in here and stick your foot in your mouth. (That's an American term by the way!) Also you should better treat your language when you write your editorial. You would certainly failure your grammer class. After all it is your language. We Yanks just borrowed it!!
My heritage is English. My mother was a war bride from West Norwood, London. My father was in the United States Army Air Force stationed in England during the war. A B17 pilot.
By the way the Revolutionary War ended in 1783. You remember, we or should I say The United States won it's independence for England!!! You need to get over it!!! Ta mate!!

Wow!! How come so much hatred? First of all whatever history courses you took certainly were not from this world. Everything written in this file in public knowledge. You can read about all of this in any public library. Like it or not the United States saved your country's a$$. Germany would have pounded England into the ground given enough time. They were doing a pretty good job of it before we entered the war. Whether you like it or not without American supply ships your country would have starved to death long before Germany would have overthrown you. In America our sense of history, (world history) is a requirement toward graduation from our educational systems. You won't find too many Americans who don't have an excellent grasp of 20th century history. Ask Americans and you will find that nearly all have a great affection of the United Kingdom. We consider the UK and not just allies but close friends. Our culters are almost the same. There has always been a great understanding between both countries. Of course both countries have their detractors but that is to be expected. You seem to be one and that's a shame. Next time you rant and rave about "FAT" Americans keep in mind that England wasn't the only country who suffered on the home front. All of America was rationed as well during the entire war which, just for your information, became just after Germany attacked Poland (September 1, 1939). Just in case your history books were incomplete. Think about it as you go through your day.

What are you some left wing communist? You Brits still haven't gotten our the Revolutionary War, have you? Do you have any idea how much to entire world owes the United States? Do you have any idea how much we are taxed in this country because the rest of the world including Jolly ole' England never paid the United States back for all the free goodies they got during the war? Yea that's right we're still paying for your debts. Two generations removed. Did you history books tell you that? I've read all of the responses to your question and let me tell you everyone is right. You don't have a clue! The United States never got one tenth of the money owed to them from the war. How do you come off with the crap you wrote? Oh yea, for an Englishman you sure don't know how to use your native tongue.
How does it feel to be really dumb!?!?!

Although I have been American all my life, I never went to school in the US, as my father was serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed overseas through most of my childhood.
Why we got involved in the war is simple: Pearl Harbor. Prior to that, there was a lot of talk as to whether we should get involved or not in the war in Europe. The attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was the deciding factor.
And as far as "Fat America" you obviously have never been here or you would see that not every person in America is fat. And if we were "overcharging Brittain and her allies for weapons and food" why is it that we weren't paid for it. The US has forgiven BILLIONS in loans all over the world since then.
But is the point of your question to teach your version of history, or to gratuitously insult us?

The US didn't enter the war until the German U-boats kept sinking out ships in the Atlantic. Yeah, we came into the fray a little late.
But, really, you know that the military leaders of our countries at that time were not friends and just tolerated each other. Don't know where the animosity came from.
Fact is, I like the mother country and still feel a sense of closeness after all these years...

Are you nuts? I supose that little adventure we took on D-day was all the brits huh? That was mostly US forces that died.
Most of the americans didn't want to get involved in WWII but we supplied the allies. Eventually we got dragged into it.
Had it not been for the US, you would have eventually gotten beaten by the Nazis. The only thing saving you was that you were on an island and hard to attack.
Why are you ranting about something that happened over 60 years ago?

Well let's see, I think we need to start with W.W.I first. The brilliant David Llyod George wanted Germany to squeak like a pique for W.W.I, considering England decided to sit on the sidelines until Belgium was invaded. Nothing like giving Germany the nudge she needed to declare war on France. I believe the English historian Niall Ferguson in the Pity of War explaines that pretty well.
So now let's fast forward to Paris 1919, who wanted Germany to pay until she couldn't. Do you know how to use hindsight, but wait let's continue. So what happend in 1936, oh that's right Hitler with his GERMANY ARMY what a mighty army it was, reocupied the Rhineland. Strike one. Let's see, ahh 1938 what a year, so what if Austria wants to have Aunchless with Germany, they all speak German, what could happen. Even Mussolini was smart enough to attempt to pull together an Alliance between Italy, France, and England, to keep Germany pent up. Never happened, Austria goes to Germany by defaut, strike two. Did you want more, I mean this is really good, what ever happened in Sept/Oct 1938, can you guess, I mean really, THE CONFERENCE AT MUNICH! Where Czechoslovkia was forced to give up its most defensible land in the Sudetenland, by none other then England with France following on her coattails. The combined forces of England and France were more then a match for Germany in 1938. But I guess a race of people from central Europe isn't worth saving.
Should I go on, I think I should. So finally the great Neville Chamberlian as had enough, no more peace in our time. After the rest of Czechoslovkia is swalloed up in 1939, England decides to take a stand in Poland. And yet even then the English expected the Poles to keep their mouths shut and not display any patriotic defensive measure. The English could'nt even get an alliance signed with the Soviet Union, letting Germany beat her at that too. And the English still wait three days before declaring war on Germany after her invasion of Poland, boy just like W.W.I, I think I see a pattern here.
The RAF and the Royal Navy outstanding job, the British Army pathetic. You can live in your little dream world but without the invasion of Russia and the entry of the U.S. how long is England going to hold out. You're entiltled to your opinion but make sure you know what you are talking about before you ask questions. Oh by the way since you like to think the U.S. is the only one who likes to make a profit during war, why don't you read about England's involvment in the First Opium War. Nothing like a country attacking another country (China) all so England could sell opium to the Chinese so the British East India Company could make a profit on the Chinese tea they bought from China. So take you smug attuide and shove it where the sun used to shine on your empire.

December 7th, 1941. That's when we "decided" to get involved, you stunted troll. And, three years too late or not, it was still soon enough to rescue your collective asses from the imminent flames of defeat.
Based on your vomited twaddle above, I suggest you spend less time wondering what Americans are taught in history class, and a little more time concerning yourself with how to formulate a clearly structured paragraph.
Now, go change your knickers.

Maybe the U.S. charged for suplies....but as a historian, I seem to recall something about a Lend-Lease policy where the U.S. supplied everything from food to tanks and planes with the understanding that Great Britain and the Soviet would pay us back. And as I recall the U.S. pardoned all debt....so basically Great Britain was able to wage war before the U.S. became "involved" at a huge discount.

Please look at a map. America is huge. All of American industry got behind the war effort and so did all Americans. That is what won WW II. You guys were dead meat and we got you out of a big jam. We lost lives and ships supplying you, nevermind the price and our country was changed forever. We sent a whole generation of American men to your defense. We grew our own food and did without alot of basic neccessities to make it happen. Sorry we 'messed a lot of things up'. Would you have been better off without us?
