There's a couple of people I know who really love to dominate the conversation. They love having all the air time to themselves to rant on and don't seem to think anything of talking over me if they've got something on there mind. I get the feeling (might be my paranioa) that they actually relish talking over me and wait for me to come round to saying something so they can start there rant over mine.

Do you know people like this? Am I the only one who feels like this? If I'm right, what is the psychology that underpins this?

I've met people like that.

It's really a desire - nay, a need - for attention. Possibly stemming from low self-esteem and a poor self-image.

You're absolutely correct.
There are 2 of my fellow employees who have this problem or rudeness (whatever you want to call it) and many of us have noticed. Anyways, another employee and I were watching and listening to these 2 carry on a conversation and we were laghing are asses off because we could tell that not only were they not listening to each other, I think they were talking about 2 seperate subjects. Although they weren't always talking over each other, it seemed as though, instead of listening to what the other had to say, they were thinking about what they were going to say next.
This does not make them bad people, nobody's perfect. I'm sure there's something endearing about the people you're talking about, or you would not waste your time trying to converse with them.
Stay cool!

I've known many people like this. Sometimes they simply lack the proper upbringing to recognize that this behavior is not desirable or polite. It may also mean they have many opinions, but relatively few original thoughts or ideas or the lack the capacity to spontaneously create an appropriate topic of conversation. Some, though, are simply control freaks.

Okay, I have to admit...I'm one of those people who likes to talk all the time. I just love talking to people, and I love hearing what others have to say. Still, though, I've been accused of trying to dominate a conversation and, really, it's not my intention. It's seriously an accidental thing. I've been working on learning to control that and to be more thoughtful and considerate to others.

I think they just like to talk. I know someone like that, and sometimes you just have to be the louder talker. If that doesn't work, then I would say something to these people. It's no fun when you don't get in the conversation too.

Normally I'm quite a level-headed fella, but there are a few things that really blow my fuse. People talking over me is one of those things. If I have the manners, decency and respect to listen to someone's opinion or contribution to the conversation, then you can damn well listen to mine!

A colleague at work asked me a question the other day. I tried to tell her the answer three times but she kept interrupting so I just gave up.
