Yes, it's called "white coat syndrome", because people get scared when they see a doctor, exemplified by the "white coat". It's something we, physicians, deal with all the time. So, what we do is ask the patient to check his blood pressure at home (or at WalMart, CVS,...) during many days, preferably at the same time of the day, and bring us back the readings. This gives us a pretty accurate estimate of his (her) actual blood pressure.

It can. Stress of any type will make your pressure go up. There is even a "white coat syndrome" that causes people to have high BP if they are in the doctor's office, but the BP is normal at home.

Are you talking about white coat syndrome...I have that..my blood pressure is always higher when my doctor takes it,,because I'm nervous and he's cute.

anxiety and pain /illness does raise your blood pressure

stress makes BP go up, so if you are stressed about being in the hospital, then yes, it will go up.
