If you aren't already, you won't ever be. Studying can help, paying attention is often a waste of time since other peoples' stupid questions can confuse you. But being smart is something you are born with... you either are or you aren't. Learning is either easy for you or it isn't. If it isn't, well, quit dragging down the others in your class with your ridiculous questions.
If its a tie for you and another person to be the smartest in class... take the unpopular view point and debate it to the point of recruiting others from the opposing side. That's always fun and a good way to gets the instructor's attention.

It really is possible. All you have to do is make an attempt to know what you're talking about. When your teacher says to read one or two chapters, make sure to read ahead. After your teacher reviews the chapter, ask questions based on what you have read and don't understand. Get to know the students around you, and form study groups!!! This is the way you will survive high school ( I don't know what education level you're at, but whatever). All you have to do is apply yourself. For some people, it comes easy, but others who work towards becoming the smartest usually get the highest grades because they actually care.

Study hard and give it the best try you have. I was second in my class Senior Year. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
