I respect everyone. I think that in some countries there is such a great emphasis on prestige and status that those with lower socioeconomic status get depressed and/or suicidal. What can I so to help these people? Has anyone else seen these people or even CARE about this social problem?

You deal with it by not giving a f*ck what other people think. You have this problem all over the world. It has and always will be here. It will never be eliminated because it keeps separation of the classes. It is like that saying "I can't control the actions of other people but I can control the actions of myself." Those people are extremely shallow who equate 'what I have' with 'what I am'. They are not that happy. Feel sorry for them.

Some people think they can feel superior to others if they have more money/prestige/status etc... Feeling superior does not mean being superior.

The greatest people are not the one with the highest socioeconomic level. They are the men and women who did something to improve our lifes or our world.

You can find the BIG great ones on http://www.time.com/time/2006/time100/

But it is easy to be a little greater every day by simply making other people feel good, help someone, do something useful for your community etc... Show the example, better yourself every day and you will soon see people value YOU for what you do and not in relation to your social rank.

India had a Caste system that was declared illegal by their government a few years ago because they (the government) became enlightened. That the caste system still exists on the personal level shows us that not everyone does what the government declares. Even if it is very unhealthy for ones world status. Jesus ate and drank with those who the Jew could not associate with because God does not discriminate. Fight for everyones right to a better education and perhaps Gods love will open the eyes of the prestigous enough so they can enjoy the love too.

Other countries? It happens right in your local community. And yes, I care. The only thing I can do is teach my children. My kids have come home sad when they were littler because they didn't have the 'in' clothes. Oh well, I simply could not afford it. I tought my kids to be thankful they have shoes at all. People who live their life by their prestige and status, are missing some of the finer things in life, they cannot smell the roses because their noses are pointing in the wrong direction. I think the only thing one can do is... as a parent teach your children that it is not what you have, or what you are on the outside, it is what is what is on the inside that is valuable. All we can do is teach our children.

One can certainly value prestige and status without becoming a snob. I certainly value a Masterpiece in a museum. . .but I don't have to look down my nose at others who don't share my opinion.

well you cannot just solve a global problem becasue you care. I think the most you can do is treat them the way they deserve to be treated, and influence others to do the same. Let whomever you come across that is mistreated know that you really do care about them. That is really the most that you can do
