Is there any city in the country that could be called the average city, and what parameters would one use to measure the average?

There's an old saying in the entertainment industry that, "If it plays in Peoria (Illinois), it'll play anywhere", meaning that Peoria is representative of average America.

I don't know if that still holds true.

Boston is definitely too big to be the "average US city".

It would definitely be something Midwestern, such as
Kansas City, Missouri
Columbus, Ohio
Omaha, Nebraska

Something like that. Sacramento, CA is a bit big but might also suit what you're looking for.

THese are large enough to have downtowns but not huge nonaverage ones like New York city.

Boston, Mass....It's not too big, not too small, but has alot of history. Greatest city in the world man :) Oh yea,,,,Uno's Pizza on Boylston St. is the greatest pizza on Earth !!!
