yes they can, that's why many employees no longer bother to give notice.

companies can ask someone to leave the job anyday without giving the employee a reason or even a notice but they will have to pay him 2 weeks worth of salary. If he has been employed by the company for longer than 3 years then they have to pay him more than that depending on the rules in the state where he is in.

If the company ask someone to leave because he gave a notice that he is leaving thsi wouldn't be calleda firing this would be called stupidity because they just have to pay him a huge sum of money instead of waiting for 2 weeks without paying them.

Some companies would act this way to scare other employees from leaving to set the example that you can check out any time you want but you can never leave.

If you decide to go ahead and fire them after they've given a 2 week notice, you have to pay them for the 2 weeks... as long as you have not broken a policy or such.
Some companies will sometimes go ahead and release an employee from their notice early if the employee has access to sensitive company data.

You better have a good reason to fire them. Once they give their notice, you can tell them that they don't have to work the two weeks, that they can leave immediately, and that's not firing them. The laws differ for each state though, so you might want to read up on your states employment laws.

Sure you can, of course you'll want to make sure there is documentation to support the dismissal. A 2 week notice is really nothing more than a courtesy extended from the employee to the employer, for the purposes of finding a suitable replacement.

Once you put in your two week notice companies can let you go early but can not fire you.

Most jobs are "at will", that means they can dismiss you at any time for any reason without explanation and, of course, you can do the same.

I've seem management try to resign and be asked to leave the same day the resigned and this was at a law firm.

No. thats wrong and undignified. Unless they were the employee from hell! then yes i believe you can, then tell them kindly and sweetly that you'd be happy to allow them to use you as a refrence, so that when the next employer calls you can warn them!

you can be fired at any time if you violate company policy or break some laws, such as stealing from the company. Giving someone your 2 week notice does not give you carte blanche to do as you please.

You may ask them not to come back to work.
However check with your state labor board, they still
might be obligated to pay you for the rest of the two weeks.

If you live in a "right to work" state, your employer can fire you at ANY time for ANY reason, or for no reason at all.
