I work because I have to.
Before 2000, I didn't have a very good work ethic. Then, I left my old job for a management position. Within 6 months, I was working 60 hour weeks, had lost 20 pounds, and LOVED my job. At the same time though, I was stressed out and couldn't relax to enjoy myself at all. I ended up having a shot of brandy every evening after work just so I could settle down.
I became a workaholic and started neglecting my family (and myself).
After a while, I began to hate the job and my boss. What did he do to keep me? He gave me huge raises and even larger bonuses. It was the money! But, finally, even that wasn't enough to make me stay.
It's been 3 years since I left there. I've regained my weight, don't drink, and only work about 25 hours a week. I miss the money, but I love my life now.
I wish more people could experience this change as I did. After all, we are supposed to "work to live" not "live to work".

Americans work a lot less than some cultures/ countries, but a lot more than others. I guess we're middle of the road.
For those who work a lot because they are, as you say, money hungry... well, nothing wrong with that. It's nice to make a lot of money and have nice things and everyone is entitled to set their own priorities. Me, I'd rather have a little less and enjoy my life, but that's a personal choice.

A LOT of us work hard but can only afford to live paycheck 2 paycheck. We work yet we get no medical benefits or retirement packages or vacations. We don't earn enough to live on. People like us are the ones keeping the pulse alive in this country so the wealthy ones can sit poolside sipping a drink and never knowing what it's like to be in our shoes. And they don't care. THEN we get to see the illegals come into the states, taking our jobs and demanding healthcare we cannot even get while they crank out more babies! There's no excuse for the way this country is being led right into the toilet with Bush ready to give us a flush.

I work 60-70 hours a week. But I'd get paid the same if I just worked the standard 40, it's called salary. But I run the business so that's different. I have many employees that work overtime though and I love them for it. They do it, not because of the money, but because they love what they do, and they want to improve the company. I know of four young guys in particular who have never worked less than 10 hours everyday they come in. They don't get paid overtime, they don't get special recognition besides me thanking them as often as possible, but they do it to improve the company they love. It's not always about money, sometimes it's about loyalty.

Yes, I think that has allot to do with it. But, right now we are in a recession so some people have to take on extra jobs to pay the bills. I work in social service which is funded mostly by grants from the government and private donations. Times are tough and they recently cut our salaries which aren't much anyway.I feel lucky that I'm single and don't have kids. But I have a co-worker who is married and has kids. She often seems stressed about the situation we have all been put in.

Americans, For the most part are lazy and greedy. That,s why I really push young people to get all the schooling they can. Without a good education, You,ll be slaving for some non-american making 6.00 an hour and living in a dump somewhere.

I was just talking to my friend about this, it seems a shame that so much of life is spent at work. however the benefits of work are great. i think it depends on if you are working to make ends meet or if you are working to become the one with the most toys
